Board Roles and Responsibilites

​Candidate Criteria
  1. Any Georgetown graduate student, whether part-time or full-time, including online, evening, dual degree, and professional students, who will be matriculated in a Georgetown University graduate program for the 2022-2023 academic year, may run for a position on the GradGov Executive Board.
  2. A Georgetown graduate student is any graduate-level student within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Georgetown College, Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, McDonough School of Business, School of Nursing & Health Studies, McCourt School of Public Policy, Georgetown University Medical Center, or the School of Continuing Studies.
  3. Candidates must be prepared to serve on the GradGov Executive Board for the 2022-2023 academic year and take on the responsibilities of their position. This is approximately a 5-20 hour per week commitment depending on the position. Full position descriptions can be found below.
  4. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a Letter of Objectives (size 12, single spaced max 3 pages, double spaced max 5 pages) explaining what they hope to achieve should they be elected.
  5. Candidates may apply to “run down” for up to 2 additional positions should they lose their primary position. In order to not be at a disadvantage, candidates are strongly encouraged to submit their “run down” positions by the February 22nd deadline.

Position Descriptions

All members of the Executive Board are expected to attend and contribute to meetings of the GradGov Executive Board and Senate, as well as programming functions.

The following position descriptions serve to help you understand the roles and responsibilities of each officer. This is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities; please refer to the GradGov Constitution and reach out to current E-Board members for more details.

President Responsibilities:
1. Oversee and direct all GradGov operations. The President shall be responsible for seeing that the duties of all Executive Board officers, Senate-Executive Committees and ad hoc committees are carried out.
2. Serve as primary liaison between graduate students and University faculty and administration.
3. Execute monthly General Assembly meetings, bi-weekly Executive Board meetings, etc.
4. Chair the Senate-Executive Constitutional Committee 
Average time commitment: 15-20 hours/week

Vice President Responsibilities:
1. Assist the President in overseeing all GradGov operations.
2. Chair the Senate Leadership Committee, which is responsible for GradGov’s monthly Senate meetings.
3. Oversee Senate elections and form the Senate
Average time commitment: 10-15 hours/week

Treasurer Responsibilities:
1. Chair the Budget Committee, which is responsible for proposing a draft budget allocation of the Graduate Student Activity Fee to the Senate at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters.
2. Ensure that all monetary transactions and commodities are accounted for and recorded.
3. Track and manage all payments and reimbursements made by GradGov.
4. Initiate, with the advice and consent of the Budget Committee, any proposal to raise or lower the Graduate Student Activity Fee
Average time commitment: 5-7 hours/week

Director of Advocacy Responsibilities:
1. Oversee all GradGov Advocacy operations in consultation with the Executive Board, Advocacy Committee, and relevant Senate-Executive Committees
2. Gauge graduate student climate and grievances to identify advocacy issues.
3. Assist the President in recruiting graduate students and Senators to serve on various administrative committees. 
Average time commitment: 5-10 hours/week.

Director of Communications Responsibilities:
1. Oversee all GradGov Communications including social media, the GradGov email account, and website/email content
2. Publish the weekly GradGov e-mail newsletter
3. Manage the branding image of GradGov and graduate students through various media platforms.
4. Manage GradGov’s relationship with University, local and national media outlets, in order to publish op-eds, statements and letters.
Average time commitment: 5-10 hours/week.

Director of Web Development and Technology (Web and Tech)
1. Maintain the GradGov website and CampusGroups page
2. Connect any Senator who wishes to attend meetings virtually and amplify the voices of Senators to provide an equal opportunity to participate in Senate meetings.
3. The Director of Technology and Web Development shall be responsible for sitting on technology-related university Committees.
4. Manage technology necessary for GradGov operations.
Average time commitment: 5-7 hours/week

Director of Groups Responsibilities (*):
1. Act as a liaison between graduate student groups, the Office of Graduate Enrichment, and the GradGov Senate.
2. The Director of Groups shall bear primary responsibility regarding the creation and maintenance of graduate student groups, as well as working with students forming the group reviewing the group constitution, membership and the like.
3. Manage budget requests from graduate student groups
Average time commitment: 5-7 hours/week

Director Of Programing Responsibilities:
1. Plan and oversee all GradGov Events
2. Each semester, the Director of Programming will present a rough calendar of events to the Executive Board and Senate
3. Advertise GradGov events and co-sponsored events in collaboration with other members of the E-Board.
Average time commitment: 5-10 hours/week

Director of Alumni Relations Responsibilities:
1. Work in collaboration with the Georgetown Office of Alumni Relations to foster a network with alumni of Georgetown’s graduate programs.
2. Work in collaboration with the Graduate Career Center to establish and develop opportunities for networking, mentorship, and other interactions between current graduate students and alumni.
3. Work with the Georgetown University Alumni Association to offer networks for accepted, current, and recently graduated graduate students worldwide.
4. Work with the Director of Programming and their respective Committees to host events, panels and collaborations between alumni and graduate students.
Average time commitment: 5-7 hours/week

Director of Interior Affairs Responsibilities:
1. Establish, cultivate, and manage relationships between GradGov and all graduate student programs and organizations across the Georgetown University system, including the Law School, Medical School, Business School and organizations like the Georgetown Alliance of Graduate Employees (GAGE).  
2. Serve as the central conduit for communication between disparate groups and organizations across the university system, and coordinate joint action between all relevant organizations in GradGov-led initiatives.
3. Facilitate and encourage cooperation between GradGov Senators and their constituents, along with relevant GradGov groups and other organizations, through the “Get to know your Senator program.” 
4. Act as GradGov President’s proxy and lead negotiator in settling disputes, creating frameworks for cooperation, and treaties between GradGov and other graduate student governments.
 
Average time commitment: 10-15 hours/week.

Campaigning Rules
1. Campaigning is permitted at the discretion of the nominee, but must be respectful
of other candidates.
    a. A campaign “speech” is highly encouraged and can range anywhere between one sentence to two pages.
2. Campaigning materials should not exceed a cost of $80.
3. Campaigning should be targeted only at voters in your program, or if you are
running for an at-large seat, only those graduate students eligible to vote for that
specific at-large seat.
4. Any nominee who wishes to terminate their candidacy prior to the election may
do so by submitting a formal notice of withdrawal in an email to Gradgov@georgetown.edu with the subject: Withdrawal, Candidate Name,
Program.
